What Changed Around the Camera?

Using a digital caliper, technology writer John Gruber of Daring Fireball measured the iPhone 18 Pro-generation camera plateau at about 0.1 mm thicker than the previous generation: 11.5 mm versus 11.4 mm. When he asked Apple whether the two generations were officially case-compatible, Apple did not state them as compatible because of that camera-plateau difference.

That small increase matters most when the case opening follows the camera plateau closely. A broad cutout leaves more room around it, while a tightly shaped opening has less clearance. One iPhone 18 Pro Max owner reported that a SmallRig case made for the 17 Pro Max did not leave enough room around the newer plateau.

We Tested an iPhone 17 Pro Max Case on the iPhone 18 Pro Max

Our test used an orange silicone case made for the iPhone 17 Pro Max with one open cutout around the complete camera plateau.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max seated fully inside the case, and the raised camera section cleared the opening without interfering with installation.

How to Check Your Existing Case

Remove your existing case from the iPhone 17 Pro Max, then check whether it fits the newer phone before spending money on another one.

Seat all four corners. Each corner should fit completely around the phone without another edge lifting.
Inspect the camera opening. The case should not press against the plateau, lenses, flash, or surrounding camera hardware.
Check the raised camera border. If the case has a protective lip, confirm that it still extends above the lenses.
Check the screen protector. Make sure the case edge does not push against the protector or lift it away from the screen.
Test the controls. Press the Action button, volume buttons, side button, and Camera Control and confirm that each operates normally.
Check the USB-C opening. The connector should enter directly without the case pushing against the plug.
Test MagSafe if the case has built-in magnets. Attach your usual charger or accessory and confirm that it centers and holds securely.

Does Your Old Case Still Suit the New iPhone Color?

Color matters when part of the phone remains visible. Clear cases with colored ring, open-camera designs, bumpers, and other partially exposed styles can leave the camera plateau, edges, or sections of the back visible.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max was sold in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max comes in Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy. An orange case chosen to complement Cosmic Orange can create a very different combination on a Burgundy phone, and that contrast will not suit everyone’s taste. If protection is the only priority, this mismatch has no real effect on how well the case works.

For Burgundy, a matching Burgundy case is the most coordinated choice. If you prefer contrast, cream, beige, gray, black, or navy pair more naturally with the darker red finish than a strong orange case.

Do You Need to Buy a New iPhone 18 Pro Max Case?

Replace the old case if it is worn or damaged, no longer suits the color or look of your new phone, or fails one of the fit checks above.

If the case passes those checks, there is no need to replace it solely because you moved from the iPhone 17 Pro Max to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
